Episode 162: DR. ALEX WILLS Give a F*ck, Actually: A psychiatrist's counterargument to The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

Psychiatrist Dr. Alex Wills offers a timely and persuasive counterargument to the runaway bestseller The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck in his new book Give a F*ck, Actually: Reclaim Yourself with the 5 Steps of Radical Emotional Acceptance.

Dr. Wills shows that what’s actually empowering is accepting and learning from our emotions instead of minimizing and trivializing them.

Drawing on insights from tens of thousands of hours with patients and personal experiences, Dr. Wills argues that there are no bad emotions–only bad reactions to powerful or painful feelings that Radical Emotional Acceptance can teach us to process.

His 5 Steps of Radical Emotional Acceptance include:

  1.   Put Down Your F*ck Shield: Identify your shield emotions, including anger, annoyance, and self-righteousness.
  2.   Name the F*ck: What are you feeling, actually? This is your emotional reality.
  3.   Listen to the F*ck: What can your emotions teach about your values and assumptions?
  4.   Act on the F*ck: Process your emotional data to determine the best action.
  5.   Thank the F*ck: F*cks are your friends! Find gratitude for the wisdom of emotional pain.

It’s not giving less f*cks that decreases our stress and unhappiness. It's being radically honest about what you feel that leads to more joy.

In this episode, Dr. Alex Wills shares his expertise on how to unpack uncomfortable emotions and overcome emotional pain.
